Overview of Ryukyu Lacquerware

This is a traditional lacquerware made in Okinawa. It is a craft that developed uniquely by incorporating the color sense and culture of the southern islands, based on lacquer techniques introduced from China. Its prominent features are vibrant vermilion and black colors, and three-dimensional decorations.

History

• 14th-15th Century: Techniques were introduced through trade with China and developed in the Ryukyu Kingdom.
• Royal Court Management: Craftsmen were organized at the Kaizuri Bugyosho near Shuri Castle, and it was highly valued as a diplomatic gift.
• After 1609: Relations with Satsuma strengthened, and it was also presented as a gift to the Shogun's family.
• Post-War: Suffered significant damage during the Battle of Okinawa, but was revived and is now a nationally designated traditional craft.

Charm of the Techniques

• Tai-kin: Patterns emerge by layering and carving colored lacquer. While based on Chinese Dui-zhu, it developed into a softer and more colorful style.
• Chin-kin: The depth of the carving and the dynamism of the lines influence the impression of the work, and it pairs well with vermilion lacquer.
• Raden: The strong iridescent luster of mother-of-pearl creates an Okinawan feel.
