Description
Handmade Black Reiban (Memorial Tablet) - 1 piece, White Wood Reiban - 7 pieces
Size: Height 8.8 cm, Width 3 cm
Typically, the Reiban for a Kuri-dashi Ihai (pull-out memorial tablet) is inscribed with ○○家先祖代々之霊位 (○○ Family Ancestors of Generations Past). In Jodo Shinshu Buddhism, to avoid expressions like 霊 (spirit) or 魂 (soul), it is common to inscribe it as ○○家先祖代々 (○○ Family Ancestors of Generations Past).
How to Write and Points to Note:
1. The cover tablet (the first tablet)
This is usually inscribed with ○○家先祖代々之霊位 (○○ Family Ancestors of Generations Past).
For Jodo Shinshu, it is inscribed as ○○家先祖代々 (○○ Family Ancestors of Generations Past) or ○○家之位牌 (○○ Family's Memorial Tablet).
It is customary not to write anything on the back.
This tablet is placed at the very front for veneration.
2. Second tablet onwards
The deceased's Kaimyo (Homyo - Buddhist name), date of death, secular name, and age at death (享年 - Kyonen) are inscribed.
If you have older memorial tablets, it is best to refer to their layout.
The basic order of the Reiban for a Kuri-dashi Ihai is to place the ○○家先祖代々之霊位 (○○ Family Ancestors of Generations Past) at the very front, followed by the tablets arranged in order of death date.
Number of Reiban:
The number of Reiban that can be stored varies by product. Generally, there are options for 10 spirits (9-12 Reiban) or 20 spirits (18-24 Reiban).
Kuri-dashi Ihai are used in major Buddhist sects other than Jodo Shinshu (such as Tendai, Shingon, Jodo, Soto, Rinzai, and Nichiren sects).
