The film, which represents the pinnacle of cinematic art, with its fantastically beautiful visuals created by the best staff and cast, continues to be highly acclaimed. Based on Ueda Akinari's Tales of Moonlight and Rain (Asagaga Yado and The Snake's Gall), with Guy de Maupassant's A Medal added, it was novelized by Matsutaro Kawaguchi, screenplay by Yoshikata Yoda, and directed by Kenji Mizoguchi.

This film, selected by director Martin Scorsese for his all-time top 10, was digitally restored in 4K under his supervision and had its world premiere in the Classics section at the 69th Cannes Film Festival.

The setting is the Sengoku period. There were two couples: Genjuro, a potter, and his wife Miyagi, and his younger brother Tobei and his wife Ohama. Taking advantage of the war, Genjuro aims to make a fortune with his pottery, and Tobei seeks advancement and heads to the capital. However, their ambitions eventually lead to an irreversible tragedy...
